    New Zealand’s first female Prime Minister Helen Clark is an exceptional individual, a politician of remarkable candor and compassion. Filmmaker Gaylene Preston had the good fortune to be at Clark’s side when the top job at the UN opened up, and suddenly the NZ politician was being talked about as potentially the first woman to become Secretary-General.

    The first world war was raging in Europe, and Australian greengrocer Fred Goon, son of Louey Fong Goon and Elizabeth Johnson, wanted to fight. Desperately.

    But to do so he would have to defy a Defence Act that banned men “not substantially of European origin or descent”. Australia was in the grip of the White Australia Policy, used for decades to exclude Chinese immigrants; the recruitment rules reflected similarly racist intent.

    Air Canada today announced the addition of new, non-stop, seasonal flights between Vancouver and Auckland, New Zealand. Air Canada's flights to Auckland will operate four times weekly onboard the carrier's state-of-the-art flagship Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft beginning December 12, 2019 until the end of March 2020, subject to obtaining the necessary government approvals.
